GEPARD
Výskyt
Gepard se vyskytuje v téměř celé Africe, i když na některých územích už jen ostrůvkovitě. Najdeme ho nejčastěji na otevřených prostranstvích jako jsou savany a polopouště, ale také na křovinatých savanách.
Fyzický popis
Gepard patří mezi kočkovité šelmy, ale svojí stavbou těla spíš připomíná šelmy psovité. Samci jsou o něco větší než samice. Má štíhlé tělo s klenutým hrudníkem a vtaženým břichem. Hlava je poměrně malá a čelisti jsou slabé s malými zuby. Nozdry jsou velké a široké. Srdce, játra i plíce jsou také velké, právě kvůli gepardově rychlosti. Dlouhé nohy, páteř i ocas mu propůjčují vlastnosti sprintera. Na nohou má nezatažitelné drápy, které slouží spolu s ocasem k prudkým změnám směru. Srst je krátká, na zátylku delší. Základní zbarvení je od žlutobílé po světle rezavě hnědou. Celé tělo je pokryté černými skvrnami, které jsou plné. Od očí k ústním koutkům vedou černé proužky. Břicho a vnitřní strany nohou mají světlejší podkladovou barvu. Na ocase je několik černých kroužků, tyto prsteny má každý gepard jiné a je možné je podle nich velice dobře identifikovat. Špička ocasu je bílá. Mláďata mají hřbetní hřívu, která je stříbřitěčerná. Toto zbarvení začínají ztrácet ve 3 měsících, ale někdy je ještě patrné ve dvou letech.
Chování
Gepard je nejrychlejší savec na světě. Je to samotářský lovec a ve skupinách se zdržují pouze mladí samci nebo samice s mláďaty.
Potrava a lov
Gepard je lovec, proto ho obvykle neuvidíme požírat mršiny. Je to poměrně slabá šelma a tak nemá sílu ukrást kořist jiným predátorům. Loví nejčastěji malé antilopy a gazely, pakoně ale také menší savce například zajíce a občas i ptáky. Někdy vysedává na vyvýšeném místě, pozoruje okolí a vyhlíží potencionální kořist. Loví tak, že se ke kořisti pomalu přibližuje a svými dokonalými smysly si vybírá oběť. Jakmile je asi 50 metrů od kořisti vyrazí. Díky své obrovské rychlosti (přes 120 km/h) a neuvěřitelnému zrychlení (100 km/h za cca 2.5 sekundy) se velkými skoky (dlouhými až 8 metrů) přibližuje k oběti. Páteř v tomto případě pracuje jako pružina a ohýbá se do tvaru písmene S a ocas slouží jako kormidlo, pro náhlé změny směru. Sprint je krátký, většinou trvá kolem 20 sekund a zřídka bývá delší než 1 minuta. Pokud v této době nedostihne oběť, lovu se vzdává. Protože se jeho tělo při tak velkém vypětí přehřívá i přes rozšířené nozdry a horní cesty dýchací. Úspěšnost lovu se odhaduje kolem 30%. Při dostižení oběti, malá zvířata zabíjí kousnutím do hlavy. Větší zvíře zezadu porazí tlapou a zakusuje se do hrdla.
Rozmnožování
Samci i samice žijí odděleně. Pouze v období páření se setkávají. Samčí teritorium je větší a může se překrývat s teritorii několika samic. Samice po 90-95 denní březosti vrhne 1-5 mláďat a stěhuje malé gepardy každých pár dní, protože lvi a jiní predátoři zabíjí její mláďata. Při shánění potravy totiž musí mláďata opustit a tak se až 90% gepardů se nedožije dospělosti. Malí gepardi následují matku kolem šestého týdne a jsou odstaveni ve věku 3-6 měsíců. S matkou zůstávají 13-20 měsíců. Mladé samice opouští teritorium matky a zdržují se poblíž něj i v dospělosti. Toto ale neplatí o mladých samcích, kteří se z rodného teritoria naopak vzdalují.

Ohrožení a ochrana
Gepard je zapsaný na červeném seznamu IUCN v kategorii: zranitelný - VULNERABLE (VU), stupeň C2a(i).
